WHEN WE BLOOM AS ARTISTS...
by Kimberly Brooks
When we bloom as artists and as people is as fickle as the creative process itself. I remember a curious anecdote about cell division in biology: when it divides it goes through five phases — Interphase, Prophase, Meta Phase, Anaphase and Telophase. The first phase is “Interphase”. For years, scientists thought that this was when the cell was sleeping. All the visible action happens from Prophase onward– the nuclei divides within the cell and eventually splits apart to form two. When microscopes improved, scientists learned that this first phase was actually the most important part of the process when the DNA replicates. Wikipedia won't even show a picture of Interphase because it's so damn boring. Whether within a day or a year or a lifespan, moments and periods of apparent inactivity are critical. We’re always processing and receiving. We can’t do this with constant chatter and interruptions. Like a “rest” in music we can’t make music, or art, without it. Everyone is like a cell in their own state of becoming regardless of what it looks like they are doing on the outside. Most are too plugged in to get any vision (turn off your phone!), some people are trapped in some other way or saddled with a false fear of being judged. Many more simply never build a body of work. Everyone is on the continuum. Remember this: ·Cézanne had his first exhibition when he was 56 years old, Where are you? Are you still thinking about it or do you want to DO IT? Once a year I review applications for a Masterclass for serious working in any media for the sole purpose of helping them build a body of work. Masterclass Applications Click Here
