The new work by the writer/poet/director Jhavier Romero, La Brújula del Invierno (The Winter Compass) is a multi sensory, multi-disciplinary, multi-faceted experience.

The work is based on the book of the same name, La Brújula del Invierno, a collection of poems and short stories, published in 2018. I came to hear a reading, but it became clear it was not just a reading. It was a theatre piece.

I became immersed in the performance, which took place in a dark, cavernous performance space. The work began with the first short story of the book and interweaves through each additional story.

In this new work, you experience each narrative as if they were Stations of the Cross, each one with its unique visual imagery and each one with its absolute moment of suffering, love, loss and hope.

The work is pure genius as the audience becomes the spectator, the witness and eventually the confidant to one who has terrible and painful memories. You are taken from one episode to the next, through winding dark rooms, each stop an overwhelming sensory experience. Each story had its own language, it’s own sound and it’s own soul.

I left confused. I felt as if I had just been witness to something undecipherable. My emotions where all over the place, I couldn't put my finger on what was it that moved me, but I was moved, and the one thing I can attest to is that I lived through it.
