In a civilized world, this is a beautiful gesture. The Los Angeles County of Museum of Art made just that. To celebrate the 2028 opening of the Las Vegas Museum of Art, LACMA presented the city of Las Vegas with an exhibition, "Family Album." The cutting edge photography group show features some of the most interesting and thoughtful artists working today.
The show sends a loving message from the coast to the high desert. Family photos share histories, establish present ties and pledge fealty to the future. "Family Album" is the first public program of the Las Vegas Museum of Art. LACMA has curated the show, with their formidable talent and massive resources. This exhibition publicly marks the relationship between the two museums. These days, the future of every institution is not on terra firma. The LVMA will not live with such uncertainty. We can expect to see many relationships between museums in our future. Just 270 miles away, LACMA has the worldwide clout to debut the LVMA as an essential element of the Las Vegas, and the Western, experience. Exciting stuff.
As federal support for the arts diminishes, new entities will rise to fill the need. The recently passed Elaine Wynn and her Elaine P. Wynn & Family Foundation is bringing the new museum to Las Vegas; the team is on the job. With this show, the city of Las Vegas debuts their new Civic Center Gallery. Many oars speed the ship. The "Family Album" show is fantastic and features 18 artists, all of them exceptional. These are names that have garnered international press, captured imaginations and stated bold assertions. They are Lyle Ashton Harris, Carlee Fernandez, Renee Cox, Delilah Montoya, Janna Ireland, Consuelo Kanaga, Max Yavno, Anthony Hernandez, Sadie Barnette, Dannielle Bowman, Hank Willis Thomas, Deborah Willis, Tony Cokes, Star Montana, Micaiah Carter, Zora J Murff, Sandra de la Loza, and Tyler Mitchell. All of these works were purchased by LACMA. This is one of the many ways the museum supports emerging and local artists. A new history begins. In the high desert. The first of many gifts is on the table. ------------------------ GORDY GRUNDY is the Editor-in-Chief of Art Report Today
