GEORGE HERMS (1935-2026)
The passing of George Herms halted my step. Another LA great creates no longer.
In death, Herms will be far more revered and celebrated than he was in Life. He was overlooked.
When Herms was coming into his own, SoCal was riding a wave of technological and creative innovation. It would be easy to overlook an artist who didn't have a fetish for finish.
I believe everyone in the world is distinctive and good looking at least once in their lives. And every artist shall have great significance. Some for a bubble of time and others an eternity.
I've always perceived Herms as a man of secrets. He was part and parcel of the Los Angeles universe at a very fascinating time. The sunny bright days cast very deep shadows. I'd like to hear more about that. And I will. Death invites academic scrutiny and many new shows.
In today's Sunday Lounge! issue, we take a fascinating look at the man, his life and his work.
