VEGAS GETS A SCOOP In our media world, 'finding a scoop' is gold. And we have a good one! Afrofuturism is long established. I tripped over its fun-lovin' cousin. This week, Art Report Today will officially publish our nationally breaking news story: "The Afrowesternist: Artist Brent Holmes Goes Deep Into Family, Culture and Country." Holmes did not invent Afrowesternism. This relaxed, unassuming movement is as old as America. Holmes is the first to slap a label on this wide diaspora. Afrofuturism is a creation; Afrowesternism is a recognition. I first heard the term Afrowesternism in Las Vegas, Nevada. Historical evidence of such a movement can be found in every corner of this great country. I believe Las Vegas is the existential home, the hub of this recognized new movement, in all of its many extensive mediums (food, fashion, fiction, music, sport, etc., et al.) To build a new Las Vegas arts future, please forward this article to all you know. Is there an artist who is already making like-minded work or who might be inspired by Afrowesternism? Las Vegas will bring Afrowesternism into our international zeitgeist. Now, what else we got? CONDUCT UNBECOMING AN ARTIST. IN A HOSPITALITY TOWN. If your Dad or Mom is a cop or a religious leader, you are expected to toe the line. Working in a company town where the industry is 'hospitality,' Las Vegas artists are expected to show some white teeth, and smile all the time. "After you, my good friend." I'm not suggesting we bake cookies for tourists, but, we toe the line. With our white gloves on, we can shake on that. "How can I help you?" There is a recent news story about a production designer on a film that is attracting attention. She accepted the job and shook their hand and took their paycheck. She did a good job, on a film that hit big. She was unworthy of the opportunity. Read this story and do exactly the opposite. Her worldview is death. Unlike our innate Joy. Click Here. Her conduct would be unbecoming a Las Vegas artist. We're grateful for every choice we get to make and the work we are invited to create. Now Showing: CouperRuss presents 'LOVE' by Naes Pierott. The gallery welcomes you to visit the exhibition through Saturday, June 27th with viewings by appointment: couperruss@gmail.com or (702) 468-8499; https://couperruss.com/allpurpose.com/naes-pierott-love |
