HOW DO WE PAINT AROUND IT?

I was recently having a lovely day. Floating high over lands and seas in my Artist Bubble. I was pondering Beauty and the improbable ways to define it. When suddenly, I was hijacked. By a powerful creature, straight out of Nolan's 'Odyssey.' The ROI attacked. My artist bubble popped. And I fell back down to earth and reality. It's never a soft landing.

We can dream. But we cannot change physical existence. ROI is a force of nature, like oxygen and gravity. We cannot paint our way around it. The artist must humbly bend a knee to the Return On Investment. To date, ROI has fueled our civilization.

Like anywhere and everywhere, Las Vegas is obsessed with ROI. The establishment pondered every possibility and they chose to turn Vegas into a luxury sports town.

You don't need to know basic math to figure out that sports are ROI friendly. Their colorful apparel alone makes a lot more dough than a museum gift shop dare dream. The establishment chose wisely.

In Nevada, the governor has a team devoted to business development, which will bring new economies to the state. In their great wisdom, they have been pursuing big ticket items, like gold, silver and lithium. Along that line of thinking, the Arts are not very sexy.

We are a blank canvas. How shall we introduce ourselves to the art world?

We need some lipstick. What can the Las Vegas artist do to claim a return on investment? We need to start banging our pots and pans. It lets them know we are here.

We know the local audience will not listen. That's OK. There is no local ROI anyway. The Las Vegas artist needs a different, bigger audience for a return on investment.

This is more than a local issue. Every artist and every arts community across the country have always had to fight for survival and a nod of recognition. This is a national issue.

Today in 2026, the fine art universe is spinning off its axis. The saintly small gallerist is folding up shop. The mid-tier folk are bleeding out and frozen in the middle. The mega-galleries are reinventing their existence. Every artist, from the student to the vet, is reeling with the high cost of basic materials.

With feet on the ground, what can we, the Las Vegas artist, do about it?

No one speaks of the Las Vegas artist locally or internationally. There is no opinion or definition to utter. We are a blank canvas. How shall we introduce ourselves to the art world? What is our ROI?

Why is ROI a subject? Irrelevancy is only a day away.
