The Long Shadow of Art Critic Dave Hickey
Breaking News: James Hayward Tells Tales No More

THE LONG SHADOW OF ART CRITIC DAVE HICKEY

A fantastic collection of 32 essays by Las Vegas artists has a thread throughout many of the works. The bad boy from Texas Dave Hickey was an English professor at UNLV. His impact on the students and his academic-minded Art Department was Titanic. I suspect we shall be hearing more of these quiet tales as time goes by.

One of the authors had a very sweet and close relationship with Hickey, showing his honeyed inside. Others had fresh new outlooks on their work, and took on greater challenges. Some called the celebrity art critic a monster. He was an influence, a coconspirator and an antagonist.

"Defining the Las Vegas Artist, 2025-2026" is available as a free digital book (.pdf) and as an Amazon print copy at this link: Click Here.

We have listed the artists who have mentioned Hickey and the page numbers. The inquiry will be an interesting way to meet some very fine people. Dip your toes into Las Vegas arts. It's interesting.

  • Mark Brandvik (Page 39)
  • Zoe Camper (Page 54)
  • Robert Beckman (Page 41)
  • Heather Harmon (Page 163)
  • Brent Holmes (Page 15)
  • Jeffrey Vallance (Page 27)
  • CouperRuss (Page 75)
  • Hills Snyder (Page 92)
  • Hickey's era in Las Vegas was meaningful to many. He was an influential magnet who attracted great attention to the city and the university. This is a fascinating line of inquiry, with many tales, which we shall continue.

THE GREATEST RACONTEUR IN LOS ANGELES ARTS, JAMES HAYWARD TELLS NO MORE TALES

Oh, hell. Jimmy has passed. Just happened. He was a fine painter and a thoughtful one. He was a cowboy, literally. In spirit, he was a wild pony. Women would giggle and call him a bad boy. He had stories, and fortunately he could recount them as only a great showman can. At every opening, he was surrounded by a gaggle of laughing friends, former students and stunned newcomers.

    Vaya Con Dios!
